FAQs

Do I need a referral from my primary care physician to get occupational or mental health therapy?

Colorado is an open access state, which means you do not need a referral from a doctor to begin therapy. Whether you're seeking support for yourself, your child, or a loved one, you can contact a licensed therapist directly and start your healing journey without delay. Accessing mental health care should be simple—and in Colorado, it is.

What is the difference between mental health play therapy and occupational therapy for children?

While both mental health play therapy and occupational therapy support a child’s development and well-being, they serve different purposes and address different areas of need:

  • Mental Health Play Therapy focuses on a child’s emotional and psychological well-being. Using the natural language of play, therapists help children express feelings, process difficult experiences, build self-esteem, improve emotional regulation, and strengthen relationships. It's especially helpful for children coping with anxiety, trauma, behavioral challenges, or family changes.

  • Occupational Therapy (OT) supports a child’s “occupations” or the everyday activities that are important for their growth, development, and independence. This includes play, self-care, and participation in both the home environment and others like daycare, preschool, or school. OT can help with fine and gross motor skills, sensory processing, coordination, attention, self-regulation, and activities like dressing, writing, or feeding.

At Arise Therapy Group, we offer both types of therapy—because we believe that supporting the whole child means caring for both the heart and the hands.

Do you accept insurance?

We are now accepting Health First Colorado Medicaid for Occupational Therapy!

Our therapy practice otherwise operates outside of the traditional health insurance model, allowing us to provide more direct, personalized, flexible, and confidential care tailored to your unique needs.

Why We Don’t Accept Private Insurance
At Arise Therapy Group, our priority is providing  high-quality care without the limitations that often come with insurance billing. By not accepting insurance, we’re able to:

  • Provide therapy without the requirement of a formal diagnosis

  • Initiate and continue therapy quickly without administrative delays

  • Offer longer face to face time in sessions as the required time dedicated to documentation requirements is significantly less

  • Focus on treatment styles and frequency of appointments that’s tailored to your needs—not dictated by diagnosis codes or session limits

  • Protect your privacy and avoid sharing sensitive information with third-party payers

We’re happy to provide a superbill (an itemized receipt) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. If you have any questions about how this works, we’re here to help guide you through it.
